Childhood Trauma
Retreat Thailand.

What happened to you in childhood
does not stay in childhood.

Childhood trauma is not always dramatic. It does not require a single catastrophic event. It can be the chronic absence of what a child needed — safety, attunement, emotional responsiveness, predictability — as much as the presence of what they should not have experienced. Abuse, neglect, emotional unavailability, household instability, loss: all leave an imprint in the developing nervous system.

That imprint does not dissolve in adulthood. It shows up in how you relate, how you feel about yourself, how your body responds to stress, and in patterns you may have been trying to understand for years. At Holina, we work with that imprint directly — not just intellectually, but somatically, at the level where it is held.

The Adult Presentation

Childhood trauma in adult life
rarely announces itself by name.

Most adults carrying childhood trauma have never connected what they experience today to what happened then. The presenting symptoms feel like depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or a chronic sense of not quite belonging. The childhood origins are invisible — or minimised. "It wasn't that bad." "Other people had it worse." These are the words we hear most often.

Chronic low-level anxiety or hypervigilance

A constant background hum of alertness. Difficulty truly relaxing. Scanning for threats that aren't there.

Deep-seated shame or self-criticism

Not situational guilt — a fundamental belief that you are inadequate, unworthy, or too much. Often experienced as personality rather than symptom.

Difficulty with emotional intimacy

Getting close and then pulling back. Attracting or repeating dynamics that feel familiar — even painful ones. Difficulty trusting.

Emotional dysregulation

Reactions that feel disproportionate. Anger, despair, or numbness that arrives quickly and is hard to move through or explain.

A disconnection from the body

Difficulty sensing what you feel. A sense of living from the neck up. Chronic physical tension or pain with no clear physiological cause.

High functioning with private pain

Professional success alongside a private experience of emptiness, exhaustion, or a persistent feeling of inauthenticity.

Treating the root,
not just the symptoms.

Childhood trauma requires a clinical approach that addresses both the psychological and the somatic — the story and the body that holds it. At Holina, the two work in parallel, every day.

Attachment-Informed Psychotherapy

Daily one-to-one therapy that works directly with the relational and developmental roots of childhood trauma. We go where other therapy has not yet reached.

Somatic Experiencing

The body holds what the mind couldn't process. Somatic work releases the physiological imprint of early trauma — directly, carefully, at the pace the nervous system can tolerate.

Polyvagal Nervous System Reset

Children who grew up unsafe develop nervous systems wired for threat. Polyvagal-informed work helps the body find — often for the first time — a reliable state of safety.

Group Therapy

Being witnessed in a safe group — without shame, without judgment — is particularly powerful for those whose childhood was marked by isolation, invisibility, or chronic invalidation.

Who This Is For

Our guests often arrive
wondering if their childhood was bad enough.

It was. If you grew up feeling unseen, unsafe, or fundamentally unworthy — whatever the reason — that matters. You do not need a dramatic history to have been genuinely harmed. The nervous system does not make that distinction.

  • Adults with a history of childhood neglect, emotional or physical abuse
  • Those who grew up in chaotic, unpredictable, or emotionally unavailable households
  • People who struggle with shame, self-worth, or a persistent sense of being fundamentally wrong
  • Those in recurring relational patterns they recognise but cannot seem to break
  • High-achievers who function well externally but feel hollow or exhausted inside
  • People who have been in therapy but feel they have only reached the surface
On programme length

Childhood and developmental trauma is deep-rooted by nature. We typically recommend our 4-Week Healing Programme as a starting point, and our 12-Week Restorative programme for those with complex or severe histories. Our clinical team will assess this honestly on the intake call — we will never recommend a longer programme than your situation warrants.
