Standard PTSD typically follows a single traumatic event. Complex PTSD — C-PTSD — develops from prolonged, repeated exposure to trauma: childhood abuse or neglect, long-term domestic violence, emotional abandonment, years of living in an unsafe environment. The nervous system doesn't just carry a memory. It learned to survive.
C-PTSD often presents not as flashbacks but as chronic emptiness, deep shame, difficulty trusting, emotional dysregulation, and a persistent sense that something is fundamentally wrong — with you, not your circumstances. These patterns began as adaptations. At Holina, we treat them as exactly that: responses that made sense then, and can change now.
Many people with C-PTSD have spent years being told — or believing — that they are simply anxious, depressed, difficult, or broken. They may not connect their current struggles to what happened to them. The signs are often quieter than classic PTSD, and more pervasive.
Weekly therapy sends you back to the same environment between sessions. For C-PTSD — where the nervous system has learned to survive in that environment — the therapeutic gains are constantly competing with daily re-activation.
Complex trauma involves layers. Each session at Holina builds directly on the last. The therapeutic relationship deepens daily. The nervous system has space to gradually reorganise.
C-PTSD is held in the physiology. Somatic change — real change in how the nervous system responds — takes sustained, repetitive, safe experience. That is what residential makes possible.
C-PTSD is fundamentally a nervous system condition. Every programme at Holina begins with polyvagal-informed work — helping the body find states of safety it may never have reliably known.
The body holds the imprint of chronic trauma. Somatic Experiencing and Trauma Release Exercises work directly with that imprint — not by re-telling the story, but by completing what the nervous system never finished.
Daily one-to-one sessions with a trauma-specialised therapist. Psychodynamic and integrative approaches that work with the developmental roots of C-PTSD — attachment, identity, shame, and relational patterns.
For genuine C-PTSD work, we typically recommend our 4-Week or 12-Week programme. The complexity and chronicity of the condition requires more time than acute PTSD. We will be honest about this on your intake call.
