Internal Family Systems
Therapy Thailand.

You already know
the language of parts.

You have met your parts, perhaps named a few of them. You have felt the moment in a session when something tender finally steps forward, only for the clock to run out and the week to swallow it again. If you have come this far in your own work and sense there is more waiting beneath the surface, you are not looking for an introduction to therapy.

You are looking for the time, the space, and the depth to let it land. That is what brings most people to Holina Healing Centre in Khao Yai, two hours from Bangkok, where Internal Family Systems work happens without the interruption of ordinary life.

What Is IFS?

A compassionate map
of the parts we are made of.

Internal Family Systems takes seriously something most of us already feel but rarely name. We are not single, unified selves. We are made up of many parts, each carrying its own feelings, memories, fears, and protective strategies. What makes IFS distinct is its core assumption that there is nothing inside us that needs to be removed or fought. Every part, even the ones that cause us the most trouble, is trying to help. The work stops being about fixing yourself and becomes about getting to know yourself, fully and without judgement.

The Self

Not a part, but the calm, grounded presence that remains when our parts step back and allow us to lead from within. Naturally curious, compassionate, and steady. It cannot be damaged, only obscured.

Managers

The proactive parts that run the day to day. They keep you organised, prepared, self-critical enough to avoid mistakes, and busy enough to avoid feeling, working always to keep painful emotions from surfacing.

Firefighters

They step in when something painful breaks through anyway, acting fast and without much concern for consequence, reaching for whatever brings relief. Their intention is simple: to put out the fire of unbearable feeling.

Exiles

The young, vulnerable parts that carry the original pain, fear, shame, and loneliness from a time when we were too small to hold it. Protectors spend enormous energy keeping them out of sight.

Self-Leadership

When the Self builds a relationship with each part, the parts no longer have to run the show alone. When the Self leads, the whole internal system begins to settle.

Why It Reaches Deeper

IFS does not just analyse a pattern, it works directly with the part producing it. People who feel stuck after years of insight-based therapy often find IFS opens doors that stayed shut for years.

IFS parts work for trauma and self-criticism Holina Healing

IFS works at the level of the system
that produces the symptoms.

Complex and developmental trauma

When difficult experiences happen early or repeatedly, the wounds live in the parts that formed to survive. IFS reaches these protective parts gently and allows the nervous system to release what it has been bracing against for years.

Chronic self-criticism and shame

The voice that tells you that you are not enough is a part, often a harsh one, but with a history and a reason for its vigilance. We get curious about what younger pain it is trying to protect you from feeling.

Emotional dysregulation and reactivity

When emotions arrive faster and larger than the situation warrants, it is usually a part stepping forward with the force of an old, unprocessed feeling. As the Self builds relationship with these parts, the system no longer needs to react so intensely.

Relationship patterns rooted in early wounds

The way we love, withdraw, cling, or protect ourselves is often shaped by parts formed long before our current partners arrived. IFS reveals which parts are activated in connection and how the Self can begin to lead.

Why Residential Goes Deeper

A residential setting
changes the conditions of the work itself.

Weekly therapy is valuable, and for many people it is exactly the right container. But there is a particular kind of depth the weekly format cannot easily reach, simply because of how it is structured. For parts work, those conditions matter more than people often realise.

Immersion lets hidden parts emerge

In a fifty minute session, protectors often stay on duty, sensing the door will close before anything important can be addressed. In residential work those protectors slowly relax, and parts hidden for years begin to trust that this time it is safe to come forward.

Integration happens continuously

In weekly therapy, a powerful session is followed by seven days of ordinary life that can scatter what was opened. At Holina the hours after a session are held within the same calm container. Integration is not postponed for a week. It happens continuously.

The body and environment as co-therapists

Parts work is not only a mental process. It lives in the body, the breath, the nervous system. Surrounded by the quiet of Khao Yai, away from screens and the demands of your usual roles, the setting itself does some of the work.

A week versus a month of work

In a focused week, most people make meaningful contact with their protective system and begin to glimpse the exiles beneath. Over a longer stay, that early contact becomes durable change, with time for the system to reorganise before you return home.

The work here
is psychological and deeply human.

Holina Healing Centre is a residential trauma and wellness retreat, not an addiction facility and not a clinical hospital. IFS sits at the heart of what we offer for people ready to go beneath the surface.

Qualified IFS-trained practitioners

Your parts work is held by IFS-trained practitioners who understand the importance of pacing, of earning the trust of protectors before approaching exiles, and of never rushing a system towards material it is not ready to meet.

Individual sessions only, no group IFS

Parts work of this depth requires complete privacy and the undivided attention of your practitioner. The room is yours, and so is the pace. This is what allows the most guarded parts to feel safe enough to emerge.

Paired with somatic and polyvagal work

As a part comes forward, its presence is often felt in the body long before it is fully understood. Somatic awareness and nervous system regulation help you stay grounded enough to remain in contact with difficult material.

What a Session Looks Like

Every session follows the lead of your own system,
yet there is a recognisable shape to the work.

Opening: locating a part

A session begins by noticing what is present right now, perhaps a tightness or a familiar worry. Your practitioner helps you locate the part connected to it and turn towards it with curiosity rather than judgement. We are simply asking if it is willing to be known.

Building relationship with exiles

Once the protective parts feel understood and give their permission, the work can move slowly towards the exiles they have been guarding. For many people this is the first time these younger parts have been met by the steady, compassionate presence of the Self.

Unburdening

The moment a part releases the pain or belief it has carried, often for decades. It cannot be rushed. People frequently describe a physical sense of lightness, a softening in the chest or shoulders, sometimes tears that feel like relief rather than distress.

Integration and rest

The hour after deep parts work is as important as the session itself. You are not sent back into a busy life. You have space to rest, to walk, to let your nervous system absorb what has shifted, because the system needs quiet to consolidate change.

You do not need a diagnosis
to do this work.

  • Have done meaningful therapy already and feel ready to go deeper than weekly sessions allow
  • Are familiar with the language of parts work and sense there is material you have not yet reached
  • Carry a harsh inner critic, or relationship patterns you understand but still cannot seem to change
  • Feel things intensely and want to understand the parts beneath those reactions rather than simply managing them
  • Have been referred by your own therapist, who senses immersive focus could move something weekly work has been circling
  • Simply feel, quietly and clearly, that it is time to give your inner world the space it has been asking for

Common Questions

What people ask
before they come.

Do I need to know IFS before I come?

No. Prior experience is not required. Your practitioner will meet you wherever you are, explaining the model as you go and following the pace your own system sets. What matters far more than knowledge is your willingness to turn towards your inner world with curiosity.

How is IFS different from other parts approaches?

IFS is distinct in its understanding of the Self as an undamaged, healing presence at the core of every person, and in its conviction that every part has a positive intention. The Self leads, and the relationship between Self and parts becomes the primary agent of change.

Can IFS be combined with somatic work?

Yes, and at Holina the two are designed to work together. Parts almost always carry a physical presence, and somatic therapy alongside polyvagal-informed practice helps you stay grounded and regulated as deeper material surfaces.

How many sessions in a two-week programme?

The number of individual IFS sessions is tailored to you, your goals, and what your system is ready for, rather than fixed to a set figure. We will discuss the right rhythm for your stay during your initial conversation.

Is IFS evidence-based?

IFS is a recognised and widely practised therapeutic model with a growing body of research behind it, used internationally by trained clinicians. At Holina we are careful never to overstate outcomes, and we will always speak honestly about what this work can and cannot offer.
